It’s been a rough year for all of us in 2020. Time feels so slow yet so fast as everyone staying quarantined around world. And more or less, we start to lose the sense of time.
We invited some of iri facade’s friends to share how they stay sane with the help from their significant “family members”.
Helen & Leo
Q: What is his name? How old is he?
H: My pet is called Leo. He’s about 4 years old.
Q: What made you decide to keep him? How long have you guys been together?
H: Leo is actually my partner’s pet. He was picked up on the street by our friend from Beijing and hand delivered to Shanghai. I have been living with him for the past 3 years.
Q: How did you spend time together during the pandemic lockdown?
H: During the pandemic lockdown, Leo and our other 2 cats, Coco and Charcoal, were the best and the only accompany of mine. Since I travelled from Hong Kong back to Shanghai in late February and had to spend 14 days quarantine period at home alone. I can’t imagine how bored and sad I would be without them.
Q:How did you get along? Are there any changes in either of you?
H: Leo has become a big brother since Charcoal joined the family last November. Before that, he was the only naughty kid in the house. And now, as he has become gradually mature, although he still would like to wake us up in the midnight sometimes by scratching the cabinet’s door when he would like to steal some food.
Other than that, he has been the most caring brother and taking good care of the little kid. And his gentle temperament keeps me remained the biggest fan of him!

Katie & Eskimo
Q: What’s your pet’s name? How old is he/she?
K: Eskimo, and she’s 2.5 years old.
Q: Can you tell us a bit more about how you two met?
K: I had Eskimo for 2 years. A friend of mine picked her up in front of a residential. Apparently，she was the only one that was thrown away from the bunch of kittens born.
Q: How did you spend time together during the pandemic lockdown?
K: She came back home after my quarantine. We still spent a lot of time together sleeping, eating together. Especially sleeping ...... She sleeps everywhere, but mostly on top of me or on me.
Q: How did you get along? Do you realize any changes in either of you?
K: Eskimo is a mini me, on how she looks and her personality. We sometimes fight because she wants to play with me but I want to have an alone time. She can tell whenever I’m angry at her and normally she will come to me after a while to make peace by asking me to pet her.
She grew smarter and smarter, even knows how to open my bedroom door.
After i got Eskimo, I have more patience for her than any human beings on earth, I can tolerate almost any destructive move that she made on the house, or me. My boyfriend says she is the only creature on earth that can do whatever she wants to me without any consequences.

Josh & Shane
Q: What’s your pet’s name? How old is he/she?
J: This is Shane Gabrielle Marc Jacobs McQueen and he’s about three and a half years old.
Q: What made you decide to keep pet? How long have you guys been together?
J: My business partner could sense that I was lonely after moving to Shanghai full-time. So she brought me Shane on the way in the evening of 11/11 a little over three years ago. I’ve had him since he was a super baby.
Q: How did you spend time together during the pandemic lockdown?
J: Since the lockdown, Shane has met two new friends Sasha & Coco who now live with us too. So, frankly he doesn’t pay as much attention to me as the first few years when we were living together but I’m happy for him.
During the lockdown we watched a lot of movies, ordered delivery everyday and shopped online. Shane got pretty deep into a cat nip habit, but I didn’t really give him a hard time about kicking it until I went back to working in the office in late March. This too inspired the additions to our family in the spring and summer. As I felt that after our lockdown, he had gotten too used to having me around all the time and felt like he got pretty lonely once Shanghai opened back up.
Q: How did you get along? Can you tell us a little bit more if there is any change in either of your life?
J: Shane is a dwarf but I’m not sure he knows what that means. In other words, as far as he knows, his legs and their proportion to his frame aren’t something that he’s ever had to feel shy about. I’m a lot like him in this respect. He also now lives in a house of women. Being a single dad was ok when he was a baby.
But as he matured, I worried he wouldn’t have enough women around to teach him the aspects of life that I simply can not teach. That all changed around Christmas last year. Soon after Shane’s step mother and I started dating, Sasha and Coco arrived. Both of which are girls and neither of them really tolerates him. So, it’s been really healthy. He reads more. Cut back on cat food and for all intents and purpose now has three strong females around to show him the way.

As we take care of our animal friends as their owners, our pets also heal and calm us in their own special ways. It is all the moments we spend together become precious memories and keep a soft spot in a human heart when surviving in this tough world.
